During WWII, the Navy and Army did the impossible. They bulldozed off the top of a mountain on Catalina Island for an airport so that fighter planes could land there in an emergency. It was said to be fog-free (this was top-secret). The takeoff was a short distance on land, then into the air. Just like an aircraft carrier, it was fly or crash.
