Title
During WWII, the Navy and Army did the impossible. They bulldozed off the top of a mountain on Catalina Island for an airport so that fighter planes could land there in an emergency. It was said to be fog-free (this was top-secret). The takeoff was a short distance on land, then into the air. Just like an aircraft carrier, it was fly or crash. Shown is the first civilian air flight to the "Airport in the Sky," Catalina Island. (United Airline plane at terminal). (June 29)
