U.S. Navy "Operation High Jump" at Naval Shipyard. "Operation High Jump" was an expedition to explore Antarctica, lead Admiral Richard E. Byrd.

Huge wooden blimp hangar built during WWII entirely of wood (to conserve strategic metal) and housed U.S. Navy "Lighter-than-air" blimps. The blimp was used for patrol along the west coast of California to watch for enemy submarines. At one time there were 4 blimps serviced and crews were billeted there at the Lighter-than-air Station in Santa Ana, near Tustin.

Senior Citizens' Recreation. In what was Lincoln Park -- Broadway to Ocean, Pacific to Cedar -- were many activities for the aged of Long Beach: shuffleboard, croquet, checkers, or just spectating, and fishing off Belmont Pier (the poles were light-weight and a good time was had by all even if nothing much was caught but smelt).

Santa Fe Railroad Depot built in the early 1900's with the famous "California Construction." The building joists were on the outside of the building and the siding was inside, a single thickness of sheeting, no lath or plaster. Plumbing web added later was on the outside. "It didn't freeze in California so why build with thick walls."
