Salt evaporation pans or ponds in Upper Newport Bay convert seawater to coarse commercial salt (NaCl), sodium chloride, with other seawater minerals). The dried salt was ground finer than the coarse natural crystals and piled up for storage in the white cone shown beside the plant building.
