Freemont Cottonwood trees planted by early teamster freighters at the all-year oasis for shade and as a guide to find the water in the parched desert as they carried supplies to the gold mines in the interior of the California Mojave Desert. A so-called "Ranger" thoughtlessly ordered them cut down in 1960 because they were not native to the Mojave. The area was "improved" by the National Park Service.
